General  Joachim Christoffel Fourie was born on 1st February 1855 at Grahmstown .

He was the general at the Battle of Leliefontein (also known as the Battle of Witkloof) This was  an engagement between British/Canadian and Boer forces during the Second Boer war on 7 November 1900, at the Komati River south of Belfastat the present day Nooitgedacht Dam. The Boers charged the British forces and the charge was only beaten off by the gallantry of a small party of Dragoons and the fire of the machine gun, which killed the two Boer commanders General Fourie and Commadant Prinsloo. The Boers continued to attack, but the loss of their leaders had disoriented them, and as the Canadians neared the rear of the retreating British column, the Boers lost momentum.
