Cornelis Johannes Spruyt

At the beginning of the war he was a Veldcornet for the Heidelberg commando. He was part of the Siege of Ladysmith and was later promoted to Commandant.

He was taken prisioner on  20 February 1900 at Koedoesrand and was send by train to the south.

He escaped by jumping of the train when his guards were intoxicated and after five days reached Colesberg and his commando.

After the death of General Gravett he was again promoted to Assistant Commandant General and took part in a lot of battles.

At the evening of 20 July 1901 between  Val station and Vlaklaagte station he was fataly wounded and died an hour later. He was buried on the farm of Abraham Pretorius  and November 1903 was re-buried with nine other burghers at Heidelberg cemetery
