Stephanus S. Buys was from 1881 in the Transvaal government and was a Commandant of the Heidelberg burgers.
He was part of the battles of Modderspruit, Spioenkop, Colensoe, and Pontdrift and was wounded near Lydenburg on 9 September 1900. He received two bullet wounds and only one could be removed.
On 20 November 1900 they had to amputate his leg and he was taken as a prisoner of war.
He lost his eldest son at the battle of Modderspruit and after the war received a wooden leg.
