Kommandant – H.S. Grobler

Hendrik Stephanus Grobler was born in the Rustenburg district and at the age of eleven moved with his farther to the Middelburg district that was then part of the Bethal disrict.

The first liberation war he was a civilian as part of the Boer forces.

The next year he was part of the expedition against Mapoch

After the Jameson raid Grobler was promoted to assistant veldcornet of the Middelburg district and a year later when Bethal became a full district he was made a veldcornet and was appointed as a Naturelle commisioner.

When the war broke out he moved with his commando to Natal and was part of the battle of Dundee and later also of the battles of Trichardsdrift and Colenso.

In 1900 was he instructed to move with a commando of 250 men to the Orange Free state. Bloemfontein was already taken by the British forces and the commando had to withdraw to Kliprivier near Johannesburg.

He with his commando also took part in the battles of Donkerhoek, Greylingstad and Donkerhoek .

After the battle of Bergendal he was sent back to his district and was with General Muller when the Nieu Zeelanders took in there camp at Wilmansrust.

In 1901 he was promoted to Commandant by the Commandant General and took part in the battle of Bakenlaagte and was sent by his commando as a representitive to the Vereeniging peace talks
