Johannes Petrus la Grange Lombard was born on 24 July 1846 in the district of Riversdale, Cape Province.
When he was ten years old his parents moved to Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State.
In 1865 he was part of the Basoeto was as veldcornet and sometimes as commandant.
In 1873 he moved to Standerton and when war was declared in 1880 he was chosen as commandant of the Standerton District.
From 1882 to 1894 he was the member of the First Volksraad ans then moved to Middelburg where he became commandant of the district
In 1896 was he again appointed as member of the First Volksraad and was in this position till the beginning of the war.
He was later appointed to chairman of the military court of the Eastern districts and held this position to the end of the war.
