Jan Thomas Martins was veldcornet of the Gatsrand ward in the Potchefstroon district for 21 years.
He was part of the Mapoch battles and relieve a few time as commandant.
In the war he was appointed to commandant and was at the battlefield with General P.A. Cronje and was taken prisoner at the battle of Paardeberg. He was sent to St Helena and died on 7 October 1901 at St Helena at the age of 58.
